99-1 How true was this match between India vs Nigeria?
Many Nigerians, except the indomie generations would've heard of the story of how Nigeria was beaten by India, 99-1.
How the match supposedly started...
A few months after the civil war,the Military governor of Lagos, Brigadier-General Mobolaji Johnson, decided to stage an exhibition match at the national stadium to help Lagosians forget the bloody 30 months' war that just ended.
Johnson wanted to stage a match against Ghana but his adviser advised him against the idea. After all, Ghana trashed Nigeria 3-0 at the independence day match in 1960 and another trashing from Ghana would defeat the purpose of the exhibition match. He was then advised to choose a team that would would be easly to beat.
Zimbabwe, USA were considered but they decided to go for a team that would easily be beaten. Then, then came up with INDIA.
The Indians on the other hand accept but on one condition, the players on both teams should be allowed to play barefooted...
Furthermore...
Legend has it that before Nigeria scored its only goal, the balls were turning into different creatures (fire, lion, stone) preventing the Nigerian team from kicking them. Samuel Okwaraji, who later risked his life to score a goal for his country, lost his life in the process. Consequently, FIFA banned India from soccer. Although there are variations of the story, the central meaning remains intact.
Thanks for reading through.
