From Coding Dreams to Media Purpose: My Journey
Many years ago, fresh out of secondary school, I had my mind set on deepening my coding skills. I already knew the basics — Python, HTML, and even Scratch, thanks to my secondary school ICT teacher who prepared us for the CODE-LAGOS competition among government schools in Lagos (a story for another day).
But then my brother suggested something different: "Why not learn cinematography and TV production? It aligns with your course, Mass Communication."
Truth be told, I had little or no passion for it. I couldn’t explain why I agreed — but I did. And that decision took me to Broadcast Arts Institute, Igbogbo.
I still remember my boss, Mr. Davis. One day, we went to shoot an interview with a tailor in his shop. There I was, balancing a heavy camera on my shoulder, setting up the tripod with extreme care — fearful of breaking equipment worth millions. Anytime my boss shouted, "John, be smart!", I’d quietly think, "Oga, do you want me to break your camera?"
We worked on several projects, but cinematography never really stole my heart.
Then came university life at OOU. In my 100-level, I joined my fellowship’s media unit as the social media handler. At first, it was just service. By 200-level, it became a passion and a career path. I began learning social media management, applying my skills to the church’s accounts. By God’s grace, the growth was visible — even alumni noticed and appreciated the transformation.
Through Terra Academy for the Arts, a Bolanle Austen-Peters Production initiative, I met industry minds who helped me see my path clearly. I connected with people like Happiness Adegbite “Starboy” 馃槀 — actor, producer, D-LAW and more — and many other amazing talents.
Now, in my final year, I look back with gratitude and look forward with excitement. Those unexpected turns and “random” decisions shaped who I am today.
I’m now building trilogymedia— a platform for media-related content. We’re still in the cradle stage, but greater days are ahead.
